Student Residence Extension, Additions & Alterations
Hermanus, Western Cape, South Africa
2022 - Completed
This project was phase 3 of the new SANSA campus extensions. As the space sciences research department expanded for postgraduate and undergraduate courses, the existing student facilities were not sufficient to meet the new demand. A new wing, which added twelve extra beds, was added onto the existing student accommodation building. A full renovation of the existing kitchen and dining areas was completed to total 250m2 in area.
Colour was added in key areas: feature wall colours were added in the passages and bathrooms and contemporary furniture and carpet selection helped to create a pleasant living environment. All finishes needed to be highly durable and robust for the busy student environment. Additional bathrooms, showers & a new laundry room were also part of the scope of work.
The original kitchen and dining area were spatially divided. It was decided to remove a few internal walls to create one large open space. Various seating and working options were provided. Colour was added through the joinery and key feature walls to create a fun environment for young adults to cook and mingle after a busy day on campus.
Décor, soft furnishings and artworks were selected to finish off the project and create an overall warm and welcoming atmosphere. The project worked with a very tight budget and the end result far exceeded the client’s expectations.
